Conk! Shelf fungi tells story of recent fall

As most of you know, I have this strange habit of taking picutres of mushrooms. The pictures generally don't turn out well (especially when taken with a flash at dusk), but here is one that is kind of neat. Digital photography has been a saviour in terms of the cost of prints.

Anywho, conks always grow facing down, so when you see one that appears sideways, you know that the tree has fallen recently. One of the neatest sights is seeing one that grows in one direction, but has a newer part growing at right angles to the one that grew while the tree was alive.
